Calla Noir: A Unique Decorative Floor Lighting

Blending Technology and Design to Create a Stunning Piece

In response to the initiative to explore new 3D printing methods, designers Kane Yanagawa and Echo Chen have created Calla Noir, a decorative floor lamp that showcases the potential of 3D printing as a finished product. With its innovative design and use of advanced materials, Calla Noir pushes the boundaries of what can be achieved in the world of 3D printing.

Standing at an impressive height of nearly 130cm, Calla Noir was printed on a large-scale delta style printer. This ambitious project was made possible through the collaboration with Modex 3D filaments and the expertise of the fabrication partners at Linkin Factory. The lampshade of Calla Noir was designed using the various control mechanisms of the 3D printing FDM process, resulting in a surface pattern that changes with the play of light.

What sets Calla Noir apart from other 3D printed designs is its ability to be a final finished product without the need for additional post-processing. The lampshade demonstrates the potential of 3D printing as a manufacturing method, showcasing the intricate details and unique surface effects that can be achieved through computational machine code.

Using manufacturing techniques unique to the FDM 3D printing process, Calla Noir expresses the coded computational movements of the machine in its pattern and finish. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the lamp but also challenges the perception of 3D printing from prototyping to a viable method for creating finished products.

The journey to bring Calla Noir to life was not without its challenges. The designers faced the task of experimenting with controllable gradient printing and achieving the desired surface finish. Through extensive research and dedication, they overcame these obstacles, resulting in a truly remarkable piece of art.

The project started in May 2018 in Tainan, Taiwan and was completed for the digital art exhibition at the 2018 Taiwan International 3D Printing Show. Calla Noir has since gained recognition for its innovative design and technical prowess, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products category in 2019.

Calla Noir is a testament to the possibilities of 3D printing in the world of design. With its unique blend of technology and artistic vision, it represents a new era in manufacturing and showcases the potential for creating stunning, functional pieces through additive manufacturing.
